  • It’s a real struggle to stop reading to write this. See, I’m in the middle of a reading addiction phase where I devour novels nonstop. lol

Presently, I’m into galactic sci-fi novels, which transport me to futures and worlds I would probably never know otherwise. Except, of course, if I were to be reincarnated or if I’m underestimating how quickly current technological advancements will progress in the near future.

But isn’t it amazing? From the safety of my own space, I get to explore everything through paperbound books inked with words and punctuation marks. I live through the stories and experience everything the author built, with no boundaries except my imagination.

And isn’t imagination the foundation of everything? Everything, from electricity to artificial intelligence and all in between, was imagined first before it came to life. People dreamed of improving ways of life, believing that things could be better, and with that, imagination began.

So circling back, one can test and grow the ability to imagine by reading fiction, much like building a house that expands into a multi-storey housing community — all starting with a mere idea.

It’s astounding and incredibly powerful what fiction can bring to mankind if people can just pause to hone it. It can teach to question everything, to raise awareness.

    To be human.

Because with imagination comes the ability to put oneself in another’s shoes, to gain empathy.

And yes, reading fiction is escapism as well. But it shouldn’t be a bad thing to want to escape. Some people find that reality should not be the way it is and thus try to find what it should be with the help of fiction. While some just want to be someone else, doing something else, somewhere else, for a little while as a reprieve; what makes people truly human is their vulnerability and everything that comes with it.

Posting it to show my heartfelt gratitude to all fiction writers out there for providing infinite worlds.

    Current galactic sci-fi reads

Book one out of two of Kaitan Chronicles; follows the adventures of Qole Uvgamut and her crew. From the cold planet of Alaxan, Qole is the young captain of a spaceship named Kaitan Heritage that fishes a volatile substance called Shadow, which can be used for both energy and weaponry.

It was a breathless read with lots of action and a slow-burn romance between Qole and Nev, a new crew member that brings trouble.

Unfortunately though, the sequel titled “Shadow Call” can only be found on amazon.com, which would cost me triple the actual price of the book due to shipping from the US to the Philippines.

So it’s a battle between how badly I want the copy and how much I need to know what happens next to just read it on ebook. Fortunately, there wasn’t a major cliffhanger in book one, so will probably wait a little longer.
Just finished the first book, Illuminae — which follows Kady Grant and Ezra Mason, who are thrust into a fight for survival when their planet Kerenza is invaded. As they escape on separate spacecraft, they uncover a sinister conspiracy.

And the story is told through a unique format of hacked documents, emails, schematics, and military files, which makes for an immersive and unconventional reading experience. Just wow. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to be alive with all kinds of books around me.

Will start tomorrow on second book.

April 1-8, 2023 — gonna do it in three-part posts

One of the most unforgettable flights: We were a group of four, and the one who had prepared the itinerary and arranged all accommodations unfortunately missed the boarding time because she was held up for too long at immigration. Can you believe it!

And then, she couldn’t rebook the scheduled flight to Kaohsiung and had to book another one but to Taipei, the earliest she could find. From Taipei, she traveled all the way to Kaohsiung the following day via bus which took around six hours, unable to buy a ticket for the high-speed rail.

The silver lining was that she saw the incident as a whole new level of solo travel, providing an uncharted experience for her to cherish.

    Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Renowned as the country’s largest port city and an industrial hub. It’s famed for cultural landmarks and visitors flock to experience the scenic Love River, indulge in the bustling night markets, and explore attractions like Lotus Pond and nearby Cijin Island.

upon arriving at the airport, we headed to find a store where we can buy EasyCards

Never wanting to seek the limelight,
    Believing it wasn’t necessary.

Her output spoke volumes for her,
And that was enough for someone
To recognize her intellect and prowess.

She took pride in her milestones,
    Though she imagined pushing beyond,
    Exploring new skills and experiences.

    Thrown into summer runway abruptly,

  • There is an enchanting battle for the top spot on my list of favorite fantasy series:

Harry Potter vs. Throne of Glass

HP — story of a young wizard who didn’t know what he was at first, from cupboard to school of magic.

TOG — follows the journey of an assassin turned queen, from notorious killer to fire-breathing monarch.

I’ve been unable to decide since the final installment of TOG was released in 2018. Actually, to be honest with myself, I’ve struggled with this decision since 2014 when I first discovered the TOG and devoured the first four books in a fortnight. I wasn’t quite ready for HP to be dethroned, but it also didn’t sit right with me to label TOG as second best, prolonging the confrontation.

Although both are masterpieces of world-building fiction, here is my dilemma:

In HP, I was more engaged with the story itself than the characters. The magical tale provided this precious world where I became a part of, and wanting to protect it as much as Harry, Ron, and Hermione wanted to defeat Voldy. It is a place I could infinitely call my home.

With TOG, I was more than invested in the characters. I didn’t expect to be tethered to them the way a person could be attached to another person. I loved Celaena as a notorious assassin and loved her even more as a half-human, half-fae queen Aelin. I fell in love with Rowan slowly, and then all at once, with his stilled brutishness to Aelin’s unchecked anger; a steadfast gust of wind to a furious blaze of fire.

Moreover, I found a family with Aedon, friendships with Lysandra and Dorian and Chaol, and camaraderie with the cadre. Even Lorcan, in his miserably twisted ways, managed to grow on me.

I laughed, cried, burned, and loved with them.

    I am them.

But that doesn’t mean I am any less invested in the tale. Similarly, with HP, it doesn’t mean I love the characters any less. It’s just that between the two, those are what attract me more to one over the other.

And I haven’t even had time to pen down how beautifully both series are written in their own rights.

See! It’s impossible to decide. I would have to keep the two at the top, letting them share for now.

Arriving at Mactan Cebu Airport, we hopped on a bus to SM City Cebu that took less than an hour.

we had our lunch with authentic dampa-paluto style dining at Seafood and Ribs Warehouse; adobong sarad (Samar scallops) is a must try
giant egg from House of the Dragon

    Moalboal, Cebu

Approximately four hours away via bus, Moalboal is a coastal town at southwest Cebu known for its rich marine life.

We booked our accommodation here and experienced the famous Sardine Run. I wasn’t able to find an uploadable pic, but the massive schools of sardines were incredible to behold, so much so that even with my poor eyesight, I was able to watch with awe.

Imagine this: our tight-knit team of five.

First, John announced his resignation last December, then Ann shocked us with her own notice six months later. And now, Ralph and I are also eyeing new horizons. But Kristine is still leaning towards staying, a mighty soul.

Before we decide, the team goes to a weekend escape to unwind, reflect, and maybe even find some clarity.

The campsite, Kamp Aleixo, is a nature-preserved island destination in Cavinti, Laguna. Two and a half hours away from Manila, Kristine drove for us.

We arrived late in the afternoon; the weather’s a bit gloomy but just perfect for a tranquil retreat.

Embarking on a backpacking adventure to mark our birth month, my friend and I set out initially from Manila, and were joined by a couple of friends from Misamis Occidental halfway through.

    Cagayan de Oro

CDO is the capital of the province of Misamis Oriental (Northern Mindanao region) where it is geographically situated.

And located at the highest peak of CDO, Amaya View offers a wide range of recreational activities. We got there via taxi from town proper.

at highest peak of Amaya View, 1,122ft above sea level, enjoying the picturesque vista of CDO. there are also life-size animal statues, and the aerial view of Noah’s ark is spectacular
would love to have wine and swim here
tried paragliding, key word, tried lol. not enough wind to carry on
Bumblebee and friends are also there
    going to Camiguin

    Camiguin

Around four hours away from CDO via van and then ferry, Camiguin is an island province located in the Bohol sea, 10km north coast of mainland Mindanao and formerly part of Misamis Oriental. Geographically part of Northern Mindanao region as well.

Known as the Island Born of Fire, it is a home for volcanic landscapes, lush forest, and pristine beaches. The island is also famous for its sweet and succulent lanzones fruit, locally known as lansonea, which is celebrated annually during the Lanzones Festival that takes place during October.

there’s a Jollibee across the street from here, we had our lunch there upon arriving at the island

Tuasan Falls but was not able to take a pic of the falls itself, so dropping my candid shot here

    Siargao

More or less a ten-hour journey from Camiguin to Siargao via multiple rides — ferry, then (van? hmn I forgot lol), bus, and tricycle to reach Surigao port and catch a ferry heading to the island.

Siargao, part of Surigao del Norte province under Caraga region, is a tear-drop shaped island and known as the surfing capital of the Philippines. The name is believed to be derived from Visayan word siaragao, meaning water or river current.

We stopped on the island for just an afternoon excursion.

    Socorro

An hour ferry ride from Siargao, Socorro is a municipality in the province of Surigao del Norte.

Socorro is famous for its lakes and lagoons, nestled between towering, forest-covered limestone outcrops. And did I mention how I found the name Socorro interesting for a place? It is a Spanish word means help or assistance.
